Insurance commish apologizes for actions

TALLAHASSEE — Insurance Commissioner Kevin McCarty sought to turn down the heat for his fundraising activities with a formal apology to the four elected officials to whom he answers.

McCarty last week triggered the anger of CFO Alex Sink by championing a Leon County circuit court candidate, Robin Lotane, with a fundraiser that hit up members of the insurance industry his office regulates. She is the wife of McCarty's communications director, Bob Lotane, who resigned last week after Florida's Gannett newspapers reported that campaign materials had been created on a state computer.

The newspapers also reported on McCarty's lead role in an annual March of Dimes charity gala, of which he is the honorary chairman, and which relied heavily on agency employees and contractors and contributions from the insurance industry McCarty regulates.
